Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) Doesn’t Pick at His Greyscale Prosthetic Because It Takes ‘6 Hours’ to Put On
Among the many anticipated storylines from the soon-arriving Season 7 of Game of Thrones is how Jorah Mormont will fare in his battle against the impending creep of the greyscale he contracted in Season 5. Last time we saw him, Jorah was ordered by Daenerys to find a cure in one of the show’s most beloved scenes. Yahoo TV chatted with Mormont himself, Iain Glen, and he may have hinted that things are looking grim for the exiled Westerosi.
We jokingly asked if he ever picked at the greyscale on his arm. “No, I don’t, just because I know the work that these guys put into doing it,” Glen told us. “The full prosthetic thing, it takes like six hours. So you get called at 2 in the morning. The last thing you want to do is [scratch it up]. I leave it alone, even though you do want to sometimes. But I resist.”
Of course, the fact that Glen is getting up at 2 in the morning for a six-hour session can’t help but make one wonder about Jorah’s state going into the new season.
Greyscale is one of the crueler diseases in all of Westeros, a kind of leprosy with a dash of zombie spice. If you’re unfortunate enough to contract it, the greyscale spreads over the skin, stiffening and cracking it. Eventually, if left untreated, it will start to hit the internal organs. It can also impact the mind, as those who have it long enough can be susceptible to violent madness. Ultimately, it’s a grueling, ugly slow march toward death. The Stone Men that Jorah and Tyrion encountered in the ruins of Valyria are examples how awful it can be.
Yet, it is possible to survive greyscale. Princess Shireen (RIP) contracted it as a baby and back in the days when her welfare was paramount to Stannis Baratheon, he employed the greatest minds to cure her of it. Fortunately, it worked and the damage was stopped at facial scarring. Unfortunately, nobody really knows what exactly stopped it.
There’s been plenty of speculation as to how our pal Jorah will be able to survive. Some have predicted he’ll take a trip to the Citadel, home of the maesters, in hopes of using their collected knowledge to help him out. Maybe even Sam could come through with a clutch assist? Others are looking to the books. Others have suggested he could return to Quarth, a city with mysterious and magical people like Quaithe.
Whether Dany’s greatest champion will be able to survive or not is a question Game of Thrones might possibly answer this upcoming season. But, six hours of prosthetic work certainly indicates he’ll be doing pretty poorly.
