Joplin’s Sterling Event Center hosts Derby-themed charity event

JOPLIN, Mo. — Folks in the Four State area didn’t have to travel far to watch the 150th Kentucky Derby.

That’s because the Alliance of Southwest Missouri’s Afternoon at the Races event got underway at the Sterling Event Center in Joplin.

The event is Kentucky Derby-themed, with a Churchill Downs hat bar, a live viewing of the race, simulated horse races, drinks, and other Derby events.

This is the 2nd year for the event, which saw over one hundred folks dressed for the part.

“The main goal is to raise awareness about the alliance and just to share our mission and the great programs that we do and to raise money for the alliance. We have quite a few programs that we are needing to undergird with finances so that we can serve more people. And so we’re doing it in a very fun way,” said Jen Black, Alliance Of Southwest Missouri Executive Director.

Black says the goal is to raise $125,000 this year to help support activities within the Alliance of Southwest Missouri.

The winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby was Mystik Dan at 16-to-1 odds.
