Joplin man arrested in sexual assault investigation facing more charges

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A Joplin man faces a dozen charges after two people accuse him of violent sexual attacks.

Charges against Michael Roland, 38, include four counts of rape, four counts of sodomy, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of domestic assault.

Prosecutors filed those charges after complaints by a man and a woman over the alleged violent encounters earlier this month.

A man told deputies his relationship with Roland started as consensual, but days later the man said Roland sexually assaulted him and when he tried to leave, Roland violently attacked him in the driveway of Roland’s home.

After refusing to perform another sex act, the man said Roland punched and kicked him and hit him with a rock and then sexually assaulted him.

The woman also told deputies her relationship with Roland started as consensual, but then she said Roland repeatedly threatened to kill her, raped and then strangled her. She told detectives Roland held her against her will for five days.

Roland is currently being held in the Jasper County Jail without bond.
