Joplin to implement controlled burns to clear storm debris

JOPLIN, Mo. — The City of Joplin is ramping up efforts to get rid of debris from last week’s EF-1 tornado.

A controlled burn will be conducted tomorrow to reduce the tree limbs brought to the city’s drop-off site, on North Schifferdecker Avenue.

City officials say the burn pit meets the requirements provided by the Joplin Fire Department.

This type of cleanup is done following severe weather disasters – and happened after the 2011 tornado – and the ice storm back in 2007.

City officials say there are no hazardous concerns for the burn – since the debris is mostly tree limbs and vegetation.

The site will be closed to the public and you are encouraged to stay away from the site – for safety reasons.
