Joplin City Council tackles tornado cleanup efforts in special session

JOPLIN, Mo. — The City of Joplin is still in the process of cleaning up after last week’s tornado.

That topic was part of tonight’s special session for city council members.

Specifically, the parts of town still need attention.

The area around 15th Street and East 12th Street near Range Line still has several large piles of debris along the roads.

20,000 cubic yards of limbs and trees have been collected as of Friday – and 725 homes were damaged inside Joplin city limits.

Council members discussed who is responsible for debris clean up – in or around residential areas.

Right now, the city doesn’t have all the equipment it needs to handle it — and is reaching out to contractors for help.

“We take this moment seriously, we want to step up, we want to over-deliver on serving our community. Community has been generous to the city, helping us with a variety of different initiatives and efforts – and it’s our turn to step up and provide great service to the community,” said Nick Edwards, Joplin city manager.

“We just decided, during the work session tonight, that the city of Joplin is going to do curbside pickup of your storm vegetation – not debris, we want to make sure we are very clear on that,” said Keenan Cortez, Joplin mayor.

Joplin residents have until June 3rd to set out limbs and branches on the curb for pickup by the city.

Those with questions regarding debris cleanup can contact City Hall at 624-0820.
