Jonathan Huberdeau set the Panthers record for career points. How the numbers break down

It’s official: Jonathan Huberdeau is now the Florida Panthers’ record holder for career points in franchise history.

With his assist on Mike Hoffman’s power play goal in the third period on Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Huberdeau now has 420 points in his seven-plus seasons with the Panthers, breaking Olli Jokinen’s mark that has held firm since he was traded from the organization following the 2007-08 season. Huberdeau tied the record with a second-period goal on a feed from Aleksander Barkov, who immediately embraced his linemate to the right of the Maple Leafs’ net once Huberdeau scored.

“He had some wow factors again tonight,” Panthers coach Joel Quenneville said. “He made a couple plays that are pretty amazing. Barky gave him a couple of nice feeds there, one he finished. It will be interesting to see how far he gets those points on the board here in Florida.”

The base numbers for Huberdeau’s record-setting mark are simple. He has 143 goals and a club-best 277 assists since making his NHL debut with the Panthers in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.

This includes 61 points through 45 games this season, scoring 18 goals and racking up 43 assists with 36 games left to go.

“He’s been unbelievable this season,” Barkov said. “He finds a way to contribute with his goals, assists or just some kind of pass or defensive play. He’s been really good this season and just looking forward to keep it going.

With the mark official, here’s a deeper dive into how Huberdeau racked up his 420 points, with a little help from the advanced hockey statistics website NaturalStatTrick.

“The way he passes the puck is like nobody else in this league in my opinion,” Ekblad said. “He’s got some crazy patience.”

There are seven others with at least 10 assists: Dadonov (26), Keith Yandle (21), Jagr (18), Trocheck (16), Bjugstad (12), Ekblad (12) and Brian Campbell (10).

“He’s been a phenomenal player for this team for a long time,” Trocheck said, “and I’ve been lucky enough to play with him for the last seven years. He’s made life a lot easier on me and just playing alongside him makes this team a lot better.

“There’s a lot of people in this world that you personally feel happy for them whenever they accomplish something as great as he did and he’s one of those people for me. Great person. Obviously phenomenal hockey player. He’s become one of my best friends over the seven years that we’ve been together. He was a groomsman at my wedding. It was almost like a tearjerker seeing him do what he’s done. It’s special to me.”

Power play

Huberdeau has been a major proponent of the Panthers’ power play since his debut, and his career stats reflect that.

Of his 420 career points, 120 have come on the man advantage. That includes 32 goals and 88 assists.

Huberdeau has assisted Barkov on the power play 16 times. Hoffman (15), Dadonov (12) and Trocheck (nine) follow closely behind.

And it’s fitting that he set his record on a power-play assist to Hoffman.

“I didn’t know that he was going for the record, but obviously he was pretty excited afterward,” Hoffman said. “And it’s a good accomplishment. Obviously a great player. I saw Huby when he was 16 years old in junior and you could tell right from then he was going to be a special player. He’s worked hard and blossomed into one of the best in the league.”

Meanwhile, Huberdeau has just one short-handed goal in his career, which came during the 2015-16 season.

Multi-point outings

Huberdeau has recorded multiple points in 108 of his 512 career games, including Sunday’s record-setting affair against the Maple Leafs.

Among those, Huberdeau has 53 games with at least one goal and one assist (nine this season), 19 games with two goals (four this season), 13 games with at least three assists (four this season) and seven games with four points (three this season).

Possibly the most surprising: Despite all of those multiple-point affairs, Huberdeau has yet to record a hat trick.

“If he’s going to keep playing the way he’s been playing lately,” Barkov said, “he’s going to get one or a couple pretty soon.”
