How Snorting Fake Cocaine Landed Jonah Hill in Hospital While Shooting 'The Wolf of Wall Street'

Jonah Hill plays an arms dealer selling weapons in Afghanistan alongside Miles Teller in the new Todd Phillips film War Dogs. However, Hill just revealed that the most hazardous role he has recently played was in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street — to the point that he almost landed in the hospital because of its narcotized mayhem.

While appearing on HBO’s Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons to promote War Dogs, Hill revealed that his role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street — as debauched financial crook Donnie Azoff — required him to snort so much fake cocaine that he actually wound up needing medical attention. As Hill recounted to Simmons:

“I did so much fake cocaine in Wolf of Wall Street I got bronchitis for three weeks and had to be hospitalized. It’s vitamin powder, but it doesn’t matter, because if you ingest that much matter into your lungs, you’ll get very sick, and we were just literally doing fake coke for, like, seven months, every day. I never had more vitamin D in my entire life. I could have lifted a car over my f***ing head!”

Given the copious amounts of phony narcotics ingested through the nose by both Hill and headliner Leonardo DiCaprio during Scorsese’s three-hour opus, it’s not hard to believe that such behavior eventually required a doctor’s intervention. And it’s also not the first time Hill has mentioned that his faux-cocaine habit proved problematic on Wolf’s set — in 2014, he also referenced it in a chat with The Guardian, while letting it be known that such health problems were more than worth it:

“I snorted so much of that stuff that I got, like, bronchitis!… My lungs were filled with powder and I got really sick for a month and a half. But, I mean, I’d do it again in a second. The first time you snort fake cocaine in a Scorsese movie you feel like… I don’t know! I got embarrassed because I said that it’s every actor’s dream. I guess it’s not, but to me, it’s a pretty iconic thing to do.”

For those with an HBO account, you can hear all of Hill’s Wolf of Wall Street anecdotes on this week’s episode of Every Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons. The actor’s latest, War Dogs, premieres in theaters today.
