Join the conversation: Introducing a new Modesto Bee commenting experience

The voices of readers like you make our journalism stronger. Whether it’s through direct interactions with our journalists, letters to the editor, or comments on our stories, your observations help inform, inspire and spread curiosity in our community. That is why we are excited to introduce a new commenting experience on modbee.com.

We temporarily disabled commenting earlier this year so that we could launch an improved commenting experience. We heard from readers about how they value the ability to comment at the bottom of stories.

Our new commenting platform makes it easier for our journalists to facilitate conversations and support respectful dialogue on our articles. It also includes exciting new features commenters have been asking for.

You’ll now be able to:

  • Use a single log-in. If you are logged into your Modesto Bee account, you will be able to comment.

  • Keep track of interesting conversations by following comment threads.

  • Mute (ignore) commenters you don’t want to interact with.

  • Create your own communities by following other commenters.

  • Flag comments for moderation.

We are excited for you to participate in this community. We have posted our community guidelines here.

Here are a few tips to find success in the comments:

  • Challenge the argument, not the person.

  • Stay on topic.

  • Be concise.

  • Respect others and their points of view.

  • Keep it civil. Don’t write anything normally considered to be offensive or demeaning to others.

  • Use your own words or words you have permission to use with credit to the author.

In short, the comments are a forum for civil discussion.

The comments will be viewable to all readers on modbee.com, but you may post comments only if you are logged in as a subscriber or a registered user.

After you are logged in to modbee.com, the first time you go to make a comment you will see that you have been assigned a random username. You may keep this username or click the link near the comment box to update your username.

Frequently asked questions

This should be a simple switch-over, but you may have additional questions. To help, we’ve included an FAQ below.

Can I comment without an account?

No. Anyone can read the comments, but to participate, you must be logged in as an active subscriber, or a registered user (with a free account).

I am already a subscriber. How do I access my account?

If you are not automatically logged in, there are a few ways to do this:

  1. Click “Log In” at the top right corner of your screen, and follow the prompts to log in.

  2. Go to myaccount.modbee.com. Enter the email address associated with your account and the password. Then click “LOG IN.” If that doesn’t work, reset your password by clicking the “Forgot your password?” button next to the log-in button. The system will send you an email to allow you to reset your password.

Am I required to subscribe to comment?

No, but you must be a registered user to participate in the conversation. Paid subscribers have the benefit of unlimited access to content, so it is highly recommended to become a subscriber to get the most out of this feature.

How do I set my username?

If you are a subscriber or have a registered account, you have been automatically assigned a user name. You can keep that username or follow the link in the comments section to change your username.

Can I change my username?

Yes! If you want to change your username, you may do so via the link near the comment box.

Usernames must adhere to our community guidelines; accounts with offensive usernames that violate our guidelines will be banned.

I liked the username I had on the previous system. Can I keep it?

Sure, as long as it is not already taken.

Can I change my avatar?

No, custom avatars are not supported at this time.

Where are my old comments?

Historical comments are no longer available.
