John Stamos to be a dad at 54

Have mercy! John Stamos is going to be a dad.

The Fuller House actor and Grandfathered alum, 54, announced in an interview with People magazine that his fiancée, model Caitlin McHugh, is expecting their first child.

“I’m going to have a baby,” he says in the mag’s cover story. As for the gender, “We want to be surprised.”

The pair became engaged in October but had been talking kids even before that. Stamos recalled a conversation in which McHugh said, “’Maybe we should have a kid [before we get married]’ and I said, ‘Why?’” McHugh jokingly responded, “Because you’re old.”

Stamos says that once she became pregnant, he proposed — at Disneyland, which is one of their favorite places to go together.

“The [pregnancy] happened. Then I said, I better have a ring on her finger because it’s the right thing to do, and I wanted to marry her anyway,” Stamos said. “So I called her parents to ask, and it was like, ‘You better!’“

How excited is Stamos to be a dad? McHugh said, “The look on John’s face when I told him we were pregnant was priceless. It was the look of a man who has wanted a family of his own but wasn’t sure it was going to happen for him. Now it is!” Stamos added that he thought the fatherhood “ship had sailed.”

Now that it’s happening, Stamos is more than up for the job.

“I’ll be a fun dad. I’ve been practicing for a long time,” he said, adding, “I’ve done every schtick you can do with a baby on TV … all the bits and jokes and diaper gags. I’ll probably just do all that stuff.”
