John Singleton in a Coma After Suffering ‘Major Stroke,’ Court Documents Say
Filmmaker John Singleton is hospitalized and in a coma Thursday after suffering a “major stroke” last week, according to court documents obtained by TheWrap.
Singleton’s mother, Sheila Ward, has applied for conservatorship for Singleton and the estate. It was reported last week that Singleton had suffered only a “minor stroke.”
“On April 17, 2019, the proposed conservatee suffered major stroke. He is currently hospitalized in coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs,” the documents read.

According to the papers, Singleton, the director of “Boyz n the Hood” and “2 Fast 2 Furious,” was engaged in several business projects and was prepared to sign a lucrative settlement agreement on or about April 30, 2019 “at the time of his stroke.”
Ward claims that Singleton’s estate will suffer “substantial financial loss” if a temporary conservator is not in place to execute the settlement agreement.
A representative for Singleton did not immediately reply to comment.

Singleton is the first ever African American and the youngest person to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, doing it for his 1991 debut film “Boyz n the Hood.” Singleton’s stark and intimate portrait of life on the streets in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles helped make movie stars out of Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, Ice Cube and Angela Bassett, and the story also netted Singleton an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
