Prostate exams save lives, but too many men put off the procedure. Now live volunteers are getting their exams live! See which Doctors hosts stepped up to the challenge, and find out what the exam is really like.

Urologist Dr. Aaron Spitz has stepped into The Doctors’ green room with brave volunteers Germaine, Andrew, and Christopher. “You look a lot happier now!” Plastic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon quips. “They all did very well,” says Dr. Spitz. “They all passed! I’m happy to say that everybody had a normal and healthy-feeling prostate.”

“What kinds of things are you looking for?” ER Physician Dr. Travis Stork wants to know. “This is the one thing men want small!” 4-time NBA all-star John Salley laughs. He’s right – Dr. Spitz is checking for an enlarged prostate.

Dr. Spitz says that while some of prostate health is genetic and perhaps environmental, diet is the biggest factor in prostate health. “It turns out that a diet that is really emphasizing plant-based foods – fruits, vegetables, grains, beans – that’s going to be your most protective diet. It seems that a diet that is heavy in animal products and simple carbohydrates is probably an increased risk factor for prostate cancer, not to mention a whole host of other diseases.” While nothing is all or nothing, a diet rich in veggies can lower your risks, and slow the progression of the disease if you do have prostate cancer.

But the exams aren’t over! John and Dr. Ordon have also volunteered to let Dr. Spitz check their prostates – on camera. Both hosts joke about being nervous as they lie down behind a tasteful curtain, but the exam takes about five seconds and they agree that it’s not really a big deal. “There’s a lot of fear around this,” concludes Dr. Spitz. “Fear of the exam, and fear of what you might find. But the good news about prostate cancer is, with early detection it is one of the most curable cancers.”

John is a vegan and, as Dr. Spitz notes, at lower risk for prostate problems – while Dr. Ordon has a history of prostate issues. Will these two Doctors hosts get a clean bill of health? The video below reveals all!
