John Oliver Calls Himself Out for Being Wrong About Trump, Cubs

John Oliver called himself out on Last Week Tonight for things he’d said while working on The Daily Show. Back in 2008 when he was a Daily Show correspondent, he predicted the Chicago Cubs would never win the World Series. This was obviously wrong because just eight short years later, the Cubs did just that. Then, back in 2013 while hosting The Daily Show, Oliver reacted with hope and joy when Donald Trump confirmed he was considering a 2016 run for the presidency.

At the time, Oliver thought it would be funny to see a Trump run. In fact, he encouraged it, even offering to write a campaign check on behalf of the American public. But, obviously, Oliver never thought Trump would make it this far. Now he accuses Trump of blowing up a political party, undermining our electoral system, and declaring open season on journalists.

Oliver used his Cubs reference to try to get people out to vote, saying you can never assume an outcome.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
