John Mellencamp Just Bought a $2.3 Million "Live-Work" Space in New York City's SoHo Neighborhood
John Mellencamp’s got a new space to call his own. The '80s rocker recently shelled out $2.3 million for an airy live-work space in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood, complete with 13-foot ceilings, white-painted exposed-brick walls, and polished concrete floors for a chic, industrial vibe. The 1,800-square-foot space, which previously belonged to high fashion photographer Antoine Verglas and art gallerist Catherine Ahnell, features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with one bed-bath combo en suite (the other features a utility sink and washer/dryer). The front of the apartment comprises a combination living/dining area with a small open kitchen, while the back area is largely made up of a windowless art studio with a minimal study/work space. A leaning ladder leads up to lofted storage space.
"The building, which was originally built in 1885, is located in SoHo's historic Cast Iron district, with all its creative pedigree, so my clients were very pleased to find a new owner to continue its artistic legacy," says Greg Kim of the Sequioa Property Group, who represented Verglas and Ahnell, the previous co-owners of the unit.
Mellencamp has several homes in his real estate portfolio, primarily around Bloomington, Indiana, including an 8,000-square-foot mansion and several buildings on 35 acres of wooded land on the shore of Lake Monroe. The singer also has a recording studio just outside of Nashville, Indiana, tucked away from the bustle of the city, as well as an oceanfront residence on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, that he’s owned since 1994.
