When it comes to politicians who’ve experienced tougher times than President Donald Trump, Sen. John McCain is quick to add himself to the list.

I’ve been worse-treated than President Trump has, so let’s be sure that we know about that,” the Arizona Republican said Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program.

McCain, a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for over five years after his plane was shot down on a bombing mission, was responding to an assertion Trump made on Wednesday when he addressed the graduates of the Coast Guard Academy.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” Trump said. “No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly.”

Trump made his complaint hours before the Justice Department named a special counsel to spearhead the probe into Russian influence on the 2016 presidential campaign. Not surprisingly, the president reacted to that on his Twitter feed:

Of course, from Abraham Lincoln to John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama, it’s not too difficult to come up with a list of politicians who were treated worse than Trump. (And here is such a list.)

The headline of this story has updated from “treated worse” to “worse-treated” to reflect McCain’s actual quote.
