John Bolton is Almost Considering a Presidential Run (Again)
The 2016 campaign just got its best early candidacy rumor: John Bolton, the Mark Twain look-alike who served as the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. under the Bush administration, is thinking about a run for president.

Of course, we've been here before, when a Bolton run was rumored for 2012. It didn't pan out, for a number of reasons.

In any case, according the National Review's Robert Costa,, Bolton is in the rumored running this time as an antidote to Rand Paul among the GOP's neocon hawkosphere. Here's his take:
"Later this year and throughout 2014, the former Reagan and Bush official will begin an informal national tour. He’ll give speeches, huddle with GOP leaders, and push back against the party’s libertarian shift. He’ll make the case for a muscular foreign policy."
The bespectacled former diplomat would then look to raise his profile nationally, according to the report. He's already a common presence on the conservative media and speech circuits. So presumably that profile-raising would involve reaching out beyond his already familiar base. As a preview of how that would likely go, here's Bolton speaking at the NRA annual meeting:

But this isn't a story about who might take the GOP nod for the presidency in 2016. Bolton's chances of doing that are astronomically low. And Rand Paul isn't exactly a frontrunner, himself. The interesting thing here is that a faction of the party thinks a Bolton run could actually work. And if the Review is right, then so does Bolton.
