For 40 years James W. “Jimmy” Miller Jr has lived his oath to protect and serve the people of Louisville, first as an officer and for the last 32 years as its police chief.

The city recognized Miller for his years of devoted service during its April council meeting.

“The city is grateful to have a police chief like Jimmy,” said Mayor Jenny Smith. “To have one with this kind of longevity is highly unusual in our day. To have that kind of continuity has been a big asset to the City of Louisville.”

Miller was first hired as a police officer March 8, 1984 and after recognizing his commitment and service, the council appointed him chief on May 14, 1992.

As a police officer, Smith said Miller displayed “unwavering dedication, integrity and a strong sense of dusty to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.”

During the April meeting, Miller was presented with a proclamation recognizing his service to the city and his community.

“Under Chief Miller’s steadfast guidance, the Louisville Police Department has flourished, exemplifying a commitment to community policing, crime prevention and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the residents of Louisville,” Smith said, reading from the proclamation.

She then went on to characterize his tenure as chief as one marked by continuous improvement, innovation that ensures the city remains a safe and secure place for its citizens.

In the official proclamation and during the meeting, the city recognized Miller for his four decades of service, leadership and sacrifice and his commitment to improving the community and the safety of its residents.
