Jimmy Fallon 'Auditions' for the Role of Kelly Ripa's Live Co-Host

Could Jimmy Fallon handle hosting a second talk show? Well, he's certainly going to give it a shot!

On Wednesday's episode of The Tonight Show, the late-night host welcomed Kelly Ripa as his guest – and used the opportunity to audition for the role of Ripa's new Live co-host.

"I'm not doing anything in the mornings!" Fallon said coyly while the audience cheered. "And we have a little chemistry!"

"We do have a chemistry," acknowledged Ripa.

Fallon then suggested Ripa give him a shot to prove himself as a co-host – while simultaneously playing one of his favorite Tonight Show games, "Word Sneak," in which the participants have to slip random ridiculous words into their conversation.

Using Tonight Show bandleader Questlove as their fill-in guest, the two took their seats in front of a drop-down New York skyline. ( Kelly & Jimmy mugs made the whole set-up even more realistic.)

The three then had to figure out ways to work words like "chimichangas" and "glockenspiel" into the conversation – and Fallon certainly held his own as co-host.

That being said, the comedian is probably a little too busy to host two daily talk shows, and Ripa's ongoing search to permanently fill former co-host the seat vacated by Michael Strahan in May remains in full swing.

"Kelly has always felt strongly that the show will need a permanent co-host and she is committed to finding one," a source told PEOPLE earlier this month. "But that process cannot be rushed, and so she is happy to take her time to make sure that the chemistry is right."

The source said Ripa is leaning towards a November announcement.

Live with Kelly airs weekdays (check local listings), and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights (11:35 p.m. ET) on NBC.
