For the second time in a week, Bartlesville residents mourned the death of a local icon, displaying an outpouring of support following the Friday death of Jim Hess.

Hess “drifted away peacefully,” after battling a lengthy, unspecified illness, his son David Hess announced on social media Friday evening. Hess’ wife, Linda Hess, died on July 30.

The post quickly garnered hundreds of responses and reposts as friends shared fond memories of the community organizer and business owner.

A celebration of life is planned for 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 in the Bartlesville High School auditorium, followed by a reception at Hopestone Center. Both events are open to the public, with community members encouraged to attend and share stories.

In lieu of flowers, David Hess requested donations be made to Jim Hess’ favorite nonprofits, including the Wildcats Scholarship Fund, Friends of the Kiddie Park and The Journey Home.

A third-generation entrepreneur, Hess owned 5th and Shawnee Discount Liquor — which he bought from his father, who opened the store, transitioning the wholesale beer company started by Hess’ grandfather into the retail location.

Many comments on David Hess’ social media post lament about interactions with Hess in his shop throughout the years, especially his kind demeanor and generosity.

Hess was also known as “Mr. College High,” due to his work creating a scholarship fund for local high school students, largely maintained by donations from local alumni.

George Tarbox, a friend of Hess, posted in an open community Facebook group spreading the news of the upcoming celebration of life.

"So as you go to sleep tonight think about Jim, with his pipe and flat hat, twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face as he looks at Linda, all glowing with happiness 'cause her man just arrived. Home at last...and Forever," Tarbox wrote.
