Jim Carrey Lawyer Slams 'Outrageous' Lawsuit by 'Sham' Husband over Girlfriend's Suicide as STD Claims Revealed

Jim Carrey's lawyer is dismissing salacious new allegations in a revised complaint filed Thursday in the wrongful death lawsuit surrounding his late girlfriend Cathriona White's fatal overdose last year – calling it an "opportunist's transparent shakedown lawsuit."

On Monday, Mark Burton – the estranged husband of White – filed the suit against the 54-year-old actor, claiming Carrey supplied White with the drugs she used to kill herself. Carrey has said White took the drugs from him without his knowledge.

The new documents filed Thursday and obtained by PEOPLE claim Carrey gave White three types of sexually transmitted diseases in early 2013 – and then dumped her and threatened her to stay quiet. They later reconciled.

The documents include an emotional handwritten letter from White, written after she learned of her diagnosis in February 2013.

In it, she tells Carrey, "I am 27-years-old and all that was left of me was a shell and a damaged one at that. Picking myself back up emotionally and mentally is one thing... Add in disease. How does someone move on and meet someone new?... I will always be damaged goods and have a stigma attached. So I have to accept something I was always afraid of. Being alone. Being abandoned and alone."

There are also a series of text messages from around the same time in which Carrey tells White, "I care about you deeply. That is obvious but this has been way too much for me to handle. I have been suffering with constant and dangerous levels of stress and I do have to let go. I've come to the end. Be well."

While the emotional exchange around the incident paints the picture of a breakup, it was not the end of their nearly three-year romance. The two met on a movie set in 2012 and reportedly dated for most of 2013 before reuniting in early 2015. They split a week before her death.

"The claim that Mr. Carrey gave Cathriona White an STD is categorically disputed," Carrey's attorney Martin D. Singer said in a statement, adding that White had contacted Carrey to reconcile in November 2014. "This is a desperate, bogus claim."

He went on to accuse Burton and White of participating in a "sham marriage," saying that numerous witnesses will confirm Burton "engaged in an illegal sham marriage in violation of the Federal law prohibiting marriage fraud to evade immigration laws" so that the Ireland-born White could stay in the country.

Singer also claims Burton and White were living in different states after their wedding.

Sources close to the White family previously told PEOPLE they were "very surprised" by Burton's lawsuit – claiming he wasn't even close with the 30-year-old White at the time of her death.

PEOPLE spoke to another family source who called the lawsuit "appalling."

The insider claimed that Burton and White "had not been close" or "even in touch with each other" at the time of her death, adding that the lawsuit has done nothing more than add "pain and heartache."

Little is known about White's relationship to Burton, 39. The two married at the Heavenly Bliss Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas on Jan. 15, 2013, according to their marriage license obtained by PEOPLE.

Sources in her hometown of Cappawhite, Ireland, previously told PEOPLE that few people, including some relatives, were even aware she had a husband.

Carrey responded to the initial filing in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

"What a terrible shame," he said. "It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world."
