The iconic No. 17 green at TPC Sawgrass causes countless players trouble each year at The Players Championship.

Jhonattan Vegas, however, had no trouble at all on Sunday.

In fact, he set a new course record.

Vegas, after landing his drive on the far edge of the island green, expertly drained a 70-foot putt for birdie — marking the longest putt ever recorded on the hole in the tournament.

Naturally, he was a bit excited.

The birdie save marked Vegas’ second straight of the round and moved him to 6-under on the day. His bogey-free 66 launched him to 14-under for the tournament — just one back from leaders Rory McIlroy and Jim Furyk, too.

Vegas wasn’t the only one who dominated on the island green on Sunday, though.

Eddie Pepperell, who made his Players Championship debut this week, also drained a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 17 — one of five birdies he made on the back nine.

Pepperell also finished at 6-under for the day, after two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, to match Vegas at 14-under for the tournament.

Both Vegas and Pepperell, however, came up just short. Instead it was Rory McIlroy — who made five birdies in his final 10 holes of the day — that surged ahead late to take the win at TPC Sawgrass, the 15th win of his Tour career.

Jim Furyk, who fired a 5-under 67 on Sunday, came in second just one behind McIlroy and one ahead of Vegas and Pepperell.
