Jewels Caribbean Restaurant closed, to be replaced by new restaurant and bar

Jewels Caribbean Restaurant and Bar, 2230 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr., has closed and will be replaced with a new, upscale restaurant by this summer.

Jewels Caribbean announced in a Facebook post that it was permanently closed March 26. Opened in 2018, it also served as an event space catering to local DJs and musicians.

The new restaurant is called Flame 13 Restaurant and Bar, which will open in June or July, according to co-owner Marvin Bailey.

Planning is still in the very early stages, Bailey said, so a menu isn't yet set. But he said he wants to make it a gathering place for poetry nights and live music, as well as a great dining experience.

Bailey was the bar manager at Jewels Caribbean and is excited to jump into restaurant ownership. James Perry, who also worked at Jewels Caribbean, will hold 50% ownership.

Bailey dabbled in bartending while in college, but later focused his career on running group homes, school administration and senior and adult care, before landing at Jewels Caribbean.

"It's about knowing people and how to serve them and making sure their needs are met, which I think translates a bit in the restaurant business," Bailey said. "You have to make sure peoples needs are met."
