A teenager has been arrested after four people, including his parents, were found shot in their New Jersey home, police said.

The four dead include the 16-year-old’s sister and a 70-year-old family friend who lived at the same residence, according to local news reports. Police had responded earlier to a call from inside the house that there had been shots fired, and found that a semi-automatic weapon had been used in the attack.

The deaths came on New Year’s Eve in Long Branch, a small city on the Jersey Shore, police had said earlier. The police and prosecutors’ office had previously confirmed on Twitter that an incident had occurred but that it was believed to be a domestic dispute and posed no danger to residents.

The county prosecutor stressed in a press conference later that they were confident that it was a “domestic incident”.

The police department in Monmouth County, where the shootings took place, said it was conducting a homicide investigation following the deaths.

The 16-year-old has not yet been named because he is underage, police said.
