New Jersey man drives van into backyard pool, dies

MANALAPAN, N.J. (AP) — Police say a New Jersey man who drove his minivan off a road, through a fence and into a swimming pool may have suffered a medical episode before the deadly accident occurred.

Manalapan (muh-NAL'-uh-pan) police tell the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1gpX1Ly) that 49-year-old Robert Koenig, of Marlboro, was westbound when his minivan struck a parked car around 2:20 p.m. Saturday and left the roadway.

The van then entered the backyard of a residence on a nearby lane, crashed through a vinyl fence and sank in the pool.

Police and emergency responders soon arrived on scene and went into the pool to try to free Koenig, who was trapped. He was pulled unconscious from the pool and later died at a hospital.

His cause of death hasn't yet been determined.
