Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux Take a Solemn Stroll Just Days Before Announcing Her Mother's Death

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux wore somber looks during a New York City outing last week, and the tragic news that followed may explain why.

The couple was spotted out for a stroll in the city on Saturday, just four days before the actress announced the death of her mother, Nancy Dow.

The pair looked solemn as they walked through the city, with Aniston often clutching Theroux's arm.

Aniston, 47, wore a large coat with a scarf and boots, while 44-year-old Theroux opted for a tan jacket, jeans and a hat – and sported a voluminous and well-groomed beard.

Jennifer Aniston's Mother Nancy Dow Passes Away at 79

The actress broke the tragic news exclusively to PEOPLE on Wednesday, announcing that her 79-year-old mother "passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends after enduring a long illness."

Dow reportedly suffered a stroke in 2011, followed by a second stroke a year later.

"Nancy fought a very long battle, with many ups and downs, and Jennifer is grateful for the happy times they shared," a source close to the family told PEOPLE. "She is pulling close to her husband and family and feels so supported by their love."

Dow was married to John Aniston from 1965 to 1980, and the pair split when Jennifer was nine years old.

Dow starred in The Beverly Hillbillies in 1966 and The Wild Wild West a year later. She also appeared in the 2004 drama Pure.
