Jenna Bush Hager Tearfully Calls Grandmother Barbara Bush a 'Fighter'
An emotional Jenna Bush Hager provided America an update on the declining health of her grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush, on Monday.
"She’s a fighter. She's an enforcer,” Jenna Bush Hager told her "Today" show colleagues. “We’re grateful for her, for everybody’s prayers and thoughts, and just know the world is better because she’s in it.”
A family spokesperson revealed Sunday that “after a series of hospitalizations, Mrs. Bush, now age 92 has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care.”
The wife of former President George H. W. Bush and mother of President George W. Bush suffers from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The 36-year-old Bush Hager told the "Today" show cast that her grandmother is in “great spirits,” adding, “She is the best grandma anybody could have ever had – or have.”
Jenna Bush Hager added that the former first lady is “surrounded by family.”
“She’s with my grandpa, the man she’s loved for over 73 years. They are surrounded by family, but I think the fact that they’re together and that he still says, ‘I love you Barbie’ every night is pretty remarkable,” she said.
Hillary Clinton tweeted a message of support Monday.
Thinking about Barbara Bush’s legacy of service to our country and the extraordinary family she raised. Thanking her for her many kindnesses to me and my family. Wishing her the comfort she deserves surrounded by her loved ones.
