Westwego homicide victim died from stray bullet, Jefferson Parish deputies report

Two teens killed, another injured in Lafourche Parish crash

WESTWEGO, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies say the man killed in the New Year’s Eve shooting in Westwego was an innocent bystander.

A recent development revealed that the shooting was the result of a vehicle being stolen in the 9000 block of Cindy Drive.

Deputies say the vehicle’s owner located the car in the 900 block of Beechgrove Boulevard in a parking lot and tried to take it back when she was approached by a group of men.

One of the men fired a shot that missed the owner and went into the apartment window of the unknown victim, fatally wounding him.

Responding deputies say they arrived at the Beechgrove scene around 9 p.m. to find an unresponsive man inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to deputies, the victim was inside during the incident and was not involved in the theft or shooting.

No further details are available at this time. JPSO detectives are in the process of gathering evidence and information to determine a possible suspect and motive.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity after an autopsy is done and the family is notified.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Homicide Section at (504)-364-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504)-822-1111.
