Jefferson County Museum leads tour of John Brown history in Charles Town

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (DC News Now) — West Virginia is overflowing with history and events that helped to shape our republic.

Jefferson County, in the state’s eastern panhandle, is the dramatic setting for John Brown’s abolitionist crusade – a challenge to the institution of slavery – and his raid on Harpers Ferry which set the stage for the Civil War.

Brown was tried in the courthouse in Charles Town. He and his accomplices were also hanged there in a public ceremony.

A walking tour Saturday afternoon through the streets of Charles Town will reflect on that episode of history from the nineteenth century. The public is invited.

“Brown and his accomplices were charged with murder, treason and inciting a slaves’ rebellion, all of which were punishable by death,” said Lori Wysong, director of the Jefferson County Museum. “One man was wounded and they needed him to recover before they could execute him.”

The tour begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson County Museum, located on the lower level of the Charles Town Library.
