Jefferson County hears audit report

Mark Davis of the accounting firm Jones, Jones and Davis began his audit report with an acknowledgement to the late Tommy New, a longtime county commissioner whose death in February stunned the community.

"There's a sadness in my heart to come here and not see Tommy New," Davis said during the Jefferson County Commissioners' monthly meeting Tuesday, June 14.

Jefferson County Administrator Jerry Coalson explained the audit is for FY 21. The county's budget runs on a fiscal year from July 1 through June 30.

"That report was for FY 21, July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021," he said.

The current fiscal year's budget, from July 1 through June 30, 2023, is $16,514,700 for the General Fund.

"The total budget, all funds with projects, is $27,001,000," he stated. Coalson said this figure includes grants and other, similar funding.

"It includes FY23's portion of the SPLOST radio project, leisure center upgrade, park expansion project, new equipment at the landfill and our road resurfacing project for 2023," he said.

Davis said the county took in a lot of ARPA money.

"There may be more of that to come," Davis said.

"They said we should get it anytime now," Coalson said, adding it will be about $1.49 million.
