Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigates bomb threat at West Jefferson Middle School

DENVER (KDVR) — West Jefferson Middle School families received a letter on Thursday explaining that someone had submitted a Safe2Tell report about someone bringing a bomb to school.

No bomb has been found by authorities, according to the principal’s letter. The Jeffco Public Schools Department of School Safety and Security and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office determined the threat had no validity.

Safe2Tell program receives second-most reports in program history

The Safe2Tell report was received “right before school started” on Thursday.

Following school protocol, administrators kept students and staff outside the building, staged on the field, while law enforcement searched the building and found nothing suspicious.

Because nothing was found, students and staff were let into the building to resume a normal school day. The sheriff’s office is investigating the tip itself so they could pursue potential charges for false reporting.

Law enforcement will be onsite Thursday to ensure the safety of staff and students.

“We understand that some families may choose to pick up your student from school today given the current situation,” Principal Kim Halingstad wrote to families. “We will provide more updates as soon as we have additional information.”

No further information about the threat was reported as of 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. According to the Jefferson County Schools website, the school serves grades 6-8 and has 482 students in attendance.
