Jason-Pierre Paul Urges Fans To Relax

The New York Giants have lost both of their postseason games.

They have been outscored 48-10, including a 21-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills that was the first Giants preseason shutout in more than 15 years.

There is a tendency on the part of fans to overreact during the preseason. This writer has been guilty of it at one time or another. Because we have been deprived of football for the better part of seven months, we are celebrating having it back by taking the preseason and making more of out of than is necessary.

This is not lost on Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. After Saturday’s loss, the Giants retreated to their locker room. Not a single player looked happy. This was until Pierre-Paul reminded the Giants and Giants fans of what it really is.

“Don’t worry, guys, it’s preseason,” Pierre-Paul said with a wink.

Those four simple words should enter the consciousness of every single Giants fan, myself included.

We are still 20 days away from the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. In spite of a 38-point differential, there is no reason to believe that the sky is falling.

The proof can be found in recent Giants history.

In 2007, the Giants went 1-3 in the preseason. In the regular season, they won 11 games, qualified for a Wild Card playoff berth, and won three road playoff games en route to upsetting the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

If that doesn’t sway you, then these factors need to be taken into consideration.

Quarterback Eli Manning has only attempted nine passes in this year’s preseason, all against Buffalo as he didn’t play in the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. The starters are not playing a great deal and, on some occasions, it’s been the backups who have really been struggling.

In the preseason opener, the Giants marched out to a 10-0 lead before surrendering 27 unanswered points. Many of the players’ responsible for giving up the lead will not be in the Giants’ roster in another week or so.

It is important to remember that no Super Bowl was ever won on August 22. Even though Ben McAdoo couldn’t find anything positive about Saturday’s loss, there is no reason to think the Giants’ 2016 season has gone to hell in a hand basket after two preseason games.

At the end of the day, the Giants have the way all the other 31 teams have looked: awful, because it is the preseason. We should all take a page of Jason Pierre-Paul’s playbook and remember that.
