Japanese Tourist Stranded by Pandemic Granted Solo Visit to Machu Picchu

A Japanese tourist in Peru left stranded by the COVID-19 pandemic was given a solo visit of Machu Picchu by local authorities several months after originally trying to see the ruins.

Jesse Takayama originally tried to visit Machu Picchu in March and had been staying in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes ever since, according to local media.

In a video posted to Facebook by the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism Cusco, Takayama thanks the Minister of Culture, saying “this is totally amazing, thank you.”

Local media said Takayama was the first visitor to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in seven months, which closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Credit: Dircetur Cusco via Storyful
