Japan’s ‘Your Name’ Poised to Win China Box Office Weekend

Hit Japanese animation “Your Name” is headed to top of the China box office. It looks set to depose “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” after just one weekend.

“Your Name” scored a sensational $10.9 million in its Friday opening session from a wide release pattern of 66,000 screenings that attracted 2.77 million spectators.

That dropped “Fantastic Beasts” to a cooler $3.31 million in second place on 28,000 screenings. Its cumulative after 8 days is $60.4 million.

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” was the second ranked new release, placing third with $2.73 million in its opening day, from 38,000 screenings.

“Allied,” which opened on Wednesday slipped to eighth on Friday with $350,000 beneath a barrage of other releases. After three days it has a cumulative of $2.78 million.

“Your Name” (aka “Kimi No Wa”) is a modern fable in which a teen boy and a teen girl dream of swapping bodies. Directed by Makoto Shinkai, “Your Name” has been included in the list of films being considered by AMPAS ahead of nominations for the animation Academy Award.

In Japan it has been on release since Aug. 27 and topped the Japanese box office in 12 of the following weeks. Its cumulative to date stands at $172 million.
