James Comey: There aren't enough 'adequate people' in the White House to stop Trump's behaviour
Former FBI director James Comey has warned that there aren’t enough "adequate people" around Donald Trump to "stop his impulsive behaviour".
“I wake up some mornings and read the President is demanding the jailing of private citizens, occasionally me,” he said in an interview with BBC Newsnight.
“And so that is one of the reasons I’m confident the answer is there are not enough adequate people around him to stop his impulsive behaviour.”
Mr Comey said that US citizens have become ‘numb’ to the President’s erratic behaviour.
“[Calling for the imprisonment of private citizens] is not okay. That is not normal.”
Asked whether he would withhold information from Mr Trump in the interests of national security if he were still director of the FBI, he replied: “Potentially… You’d have to think about it in a way you probably wouldn’t have with other presidents.”
Mr Comey, who has released a memoir, has previously said that Mr Trump was “morally unfit” to be president.
