James Cameron “Used To Be” A ‘Star Wars’ Fan But Thinks ‘Force Awakens’ Is Far, Far Away From Original Six

Editor’s note: The YouTube video was set to private after this story posted. James Cameron knows a thing or three about visual effects and successful moviemaking, having helmed the two biggest moneymakers in cinematic history. So what film made him get into the business? Star Wars. In an interview that hit YouTube recently, he says he “used to be” a fan of the franchise, praising George Lucas’ Original Six — but admits J.J. Abrams’ recent sequel hardly made him give a rebel yell.

“I don’t want to say too much about the film,” Cameron tells interviewer Hannah Litchfield when asked about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But then he goes on to say he has “a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams and I want to see where they’re taking it next, you know — see what they’re doing with it.” Sounds like a semi-complement about the third-biggest film of all time, right? Maybe not. “I have to say that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So for me, the jury’s out. I want to see where they go with it.”

Maybe Disney just found its title for the next installment: Star Wars: Episode VIII – How’s This, James?

But Cameron admits to being inspired by the 1977 original film. “Everything just kind of blew up at that point in the visual effects world,” the Avatar and Titanic filmmaker says. “It was a big revolution, and I wanted to be in on it. Star Wars was the film that made me want to go actually do it.”

Your move, Rian Johnson.
