Jaguar Previews First Electric I-Pace SUV Concept Before L.A. Auto Show

Before the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show opens this week, British luxury car brand Jaguar gave media, film, and sports stars who are Jag enthusiasts the first global look at its I-Pace electric performance vehicle concept that may give Tesla some competition. Jaguar confirmed during a “virtual reality” debut that the new electric sport SUV that will seat 5 will begin production and go on sale in 2018.

The new I-Pace Concept, which is based on the same architecture as the new F-Pace premium SUV, incorporates new technology to create an electric performance package that, according to Jaguar, acclerates to 60 mph in just 4 seconds with the power of a 90-kWh battery that has an estimated range of 220 miles (EPAe) before recharging. The bold, sharply designed all-wheel-drive (AWD) super SUV offers muscular performance with twin-electric motors that generate the equivalent of 400 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, based on EPA estimates. The new I-Pace can be recharged at public charging stations in just over 2 hours, according to Jaguar.

Preview guests—including entertainment and sports stars James Corden, Michelle Rodriguez, Gavin Rossdale, and Bryce Harper from the Washington Nationals—were stationed in seats at virtual reality hubs in Los Angeles and London. The celebs used headsets to put themselves inside the concept car to interact with other participants who sat in virtual seats and had a 360-degree view of Venice Beach, while being able to watch the I-Pace Concept race through a virtual desert. Jaguar officials suggest that interested consumers can register now at jaguarusa.com to become one of the first I-Pace owners.
