Jaden and Willow Smith Discussed Generational Gaps with Pharrell

The sibling duo also explain the importance of using your platform for good.

Jaden and Willow Smith are always doing their best to enlighten and inspire those around them, as well as the many other young people around the world who admire them. In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, the sibling duo have a conversation with Pharrell about generational gaps, family values, the importance of using their platform to spread positivity, as well as friendly sibling competition.

With Jaden and Willow being only 18 and 15 years old, respectively, it comes as little surprise that the topics of social media and generational gaps would come into conversation. Probably without any thought, Willow seemed to reference her own father's 1988 single when discussing the misunderstandings between older and younger generations. "It seems like they don't understand our thought process," said Willow. "I can definitely see things that have happened in the past that they're holding on to and things that are happening right now that bog them down, but this generation wants to transcend them."

While older folks may see social media as just a waste of time, both of them agreed that they are pros and cons to the platform. "I know so many kids who literally are, like, Instagram-famous. They have done nothing but post pictures on Instagram. And they have followings," Willow explained. While Jaden explained the flip side of the equation: "It's good to be happy and tell us how cool your life is and how awesome you are on social media. That's great because it inspires other people to be happy, too." But he made sure not to leave out that trying to impress others or put on a fake image is not the away to achieve this happiness.

Pharrell pointed out that the siblings seem to be very in tuned with one another, to which they explained how their family dynamic made them who they are. Unlike most siblings, there doesn't seem to be any fierce competition. "We never really felt competitive because Willow's always been better than me at everything," Jaden admitted. "There's been no competition." Though Willow disagreed, they both explained that rather than competing seeing the other one better themselves inspires each of them to continuing doing more.

Jaden and Willow's long discussion with Pharrell showcased that these two teens are wise far beyond their years, and are still growing and willing to learn more. Both went on to share their favorite films, books, and philosophers. Even with each of them currently having successful careers, the two admitted that they each have plans to enroll into college in the near future.
