JaCoby Jones' mom was ecstatic about her son's first MLB hit

Tuesday night was a big night for 24-year-old minor league third baseman JaCoby Jones. Well, I should call him a former minor league third baseman. Because on Tuesday night he made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers, and he had a great game.

He did what every minor leaguer hopes to do in their first big league game: he got his very first MLB hit. And that’s not all — he got his first RBI as well. Not just one, but two!

It was the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Tigers were tied 3-3 with the Chicago White Sox. Jones came to the plate with runners on first and second, ready to face White Sox pitcher Matt Albers. Jones took a ball, then tried to bunt (which ended up foul), and took a called strike.

The fourth pitch of the at bat was down and out of the zone, but Jones went down to get it and lined it to right field. Both runners would score, and Jones was triumphantly standing on second base with a double as his first hit.

In all, nine Tigers would come to the plate in the sixth inning and four runs would score — two of them thanks to JaCoby Jones. Even though his hit was pretty great, by far the best part about it is the reaction of his mother, Mary Jones. Her response to her son’s first major league hit was so delightful that I had to make two separate gifs of it.

Jones’ hit and his mom’s reaction isn’t the entire story, though. The Jones family hails from just outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, so getting to Detroit in time for their son’s debut wasn’t easy. According to the Detroit Free Press, they didn’t find out that he’d been called up until late Monday night, so they had to hustle. They drove to New Orleans, Louisiana the next morning and caught the last two seats on a flight to Detroit. They made it to the stadium with just a few hours to spare, but it was clearly worth it. The Tigers even presented the Jones family with a gift to commemorate JaCoby’s first hit.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that Jones was called up specifically to inject some life into the Tigers’ offense. With the Tigers’ 8-4 win, it looks like he (and his mom) did just that.
