Jackson police: Suspect identified in connection to shooting death of woman at Economy Inn

Jackson police have identified a suspect in connection with the death of a woman at a Jackson hotel Tuesday after a domestic dispute escalated and shots were fired.

Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Deric Hearn said Wednesday afternoon Clyde Hawkins, 74, is a suspect in the woman's death. Hawkins is charged with murder, according to Hinds County Detention Center records.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said she has been unable to cornfirm the identify of the dead woman. The woman's fingerprints have been sent to the state's crime lab in an attempt to identify her.

Jackson police were called about 7 a.m. to investigate a shooting at the Economy Inn, 3016 W. Northside Dr., police spokesperson Sam Brown said.

“Based on the investigation, these types of interpersonal crimes involving people who know each other are very hard to predict and or prevent," Jackson Police Chief James Davis said in a statement.

Davis added 86% of 2021 homicides occurred because of interpersonal disputes where the victims knew the offender.

This is the first homicide in Jackson in 2022, according to records kept by the Clarion Ledger. The capital city had 155 homicides in 2021, making it the highest number in recorded history and surpassing 2020's record of 130 homicides.
