Jackson County expands hours, hiring more staff for personal property tax lines
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Jackson County leaders are making changes to potentially curb the mass of people lined up for 2024 personal property tax concerns.
Jackson County Administrator Troy Schulte said the assessment department has started new Saturday hours, effective this past weekend.
On Saturday they served 150 people who were in line by 8 a.m. and then had to cut the line off.
Schulte said the department plans to continue extra Saturday hours through April.

The Jackson County Assessment Department also had new staff start Monday. The county is aiming to hire enough staff to reopen its downtown Kansas City office by May.
Right now, all personal property staff are located at the Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence. Other assessment staff are located at the department’s KC office at 1300 Washington Ave. but residents cannot go to that location for personal property issues.
Jackson County residents have been lining up in droves for months now, many at the Independence courthouse before the sun rises to snag a spot in line.

Even back in December, before the deadline to pay 2023 personal property taxes, hordes of people were waiting in Independence. Some Jackson County residents have described the wait as “the purgatory experience.”
