J.K. Rowling launches charitable campaign with Facebook Live video

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is continuing her charitable efforts with Lumos by launching a worldwide campaign called We Are Lumos Worldwide. To mark the kick-off, the renowned writer sat down for a Facebook Live interview.

As the founder of Lumos, Rowling discussed the initiative, which is a series of events taking place all around the world to help disadvantaged children leave orphanages and start their own lives.

"If you take nothing else away tonight, I'd like you to remember this is a solvable problem," she said in the video (shown below). "Eight million children is an unfathomably large number — it's so hard to really take in what that means, eight million — but we can solve it. We absolutely do need funds but we need to change minds. And if we change minds we will change lives."

In addition, Rowling announced the launch of a new limited edition T-shirt, with at least 60 percent of the purchase price going to support Lumos programs around the world. The design features a quote from Rowling's 2008 Harvard commencement speech: “We do not need magic to transform our world; we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already.”

Rowling is also juggling her stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as well as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, marking her first original screenplay. "I have a very, very supportive family, and I never answer emails," she said of managing all her endeavors. "I find it makes life a lot simpler if you just forget a lot of things you're supposed to be doing."
