A.J. Green and Jalen Ramsey will not be suspended for on-field fracas

A.J. Green turned the Cincinnati Bengals-Jacksonville Jaguars game into a UFC pay-per-view, and still he didn’t get suspended by the NFL.

Green attacked Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, grabbing him around the neck and dragging him down, throwing a couple punches, dragging Ramsey back down again and throwing another punch at him when he was on his back. Green was ejected from the game but not suspended, according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union and other reports.

Ramsey won’t be suspended either after being ejected, but that’s no surprise. All Ramsey did was shove Green at the end of a play, which isn’t close to a major offense. Reports said officials thought they saw Ramsey throw a punch and that’s why he was ejected, but he didn’t do anything to deserve the ejection and clearly wasn’t going to be suspended.

The NFL will decide if either or both players will be fined later in the week.

The Green non-suspension obviously is big for the Bengals, who scored seven points in a loss Sunday with Green in the locker room most of the day. It’s also curious given that Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans was suspended for a cheap shot on New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Green’s actions were probably worse, but he was ejected for his game, and Evans wasn’t. The NFL assumed Green had served a punishment by missing more than half of the Jaguars game.

Green has never been known as the type of player to instigate like he did Sunday, so clearly Ramsey was under his skin. At least he won’t have to miss any more time as a result of losing his temper.
