iWitness: Thousands flee volcanic eruption in Philippines

An estimated 21,000 people have been displaced as the Philippines’ most active volcano, Mount Mayon, remains on the verge of a major eruption. Many of the evacuees have been relocated to makeshift shelters in nearby schools and other public buildings. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has rated the volcano at Alert Level 3, out of a possible 5, and warns that smoke and lava discharge may continue for several weeks. Mount Mayon last erupted in 2013 and claimed the lives of five climbers.
