Ivanka Trump’s Husband Says She Once Signed a Shoe for a Fan While Holding Her Daughter
In the midst of the U.S. presidential campaign, Ivanka Trump — elder daughter of the Donald — has been elected one of 50 people in Variety’s “New Power of New York” list, which honor “a new generation of movers and shakers that capture the best of Manhattan,” according to the site. The publication asked Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner, to pen a tribute to his entrepreneurial wife and the mother of his three children. He gushes, of course, about his “amazing” spouse, but he also praises her ability to be both a consummate professional and a supermom.
In one anecdote, he recalls a moment when the 34-year-old had her hands full — quite literally — but didn’t miss a beat when the opportunity came to thank a fan of her popular footwear line. He wrote:
“Ivanka defines the phrase ‘hands on.’ A few years ago, at a large family function, Ivanka was carrying a plate of snacks in one hand and our daughter, Arabella, with the other, when she was approached by a guest holding a Sharpie. The woman took off her heels, handed Ivanka the marker and asked her to sign them — they were Ivanka Trump shoes. The timing was less than ideal, but Ivanka knows that the women who buy her clothes are often like her, busy moms trying to (sometimes literally) balance their work and family lives. Ivanka signed the shoes with a smile and then resumed being supermom to our very busy toddler.”
And that’s just one way in which Kushner is impressed by his multitasking spouse. He points to her courage, poise, and business acumen as just some of the qualities he admires in Ivanka. He acknowledges the scrutiny she’s under — as the daughter of the Republican presidential candidate, a business owner, and a public figure in her own right — and praises her ability to juggle it all without breaking a sweat (not outwardly anyway). “Grace under pressure is what she does best, and I could not be more proud of her,” Kushner writes.
As Kushner points out, Ivanka “runs her own lifestyle company and IvankaTrump.com, is finishing her second book, ‘Women Who Work,’ and is an executive in her family’s real estate business.” Her first book, “The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life,” debuted in 2010 and was a New York Times bestseller. For her second, upcoming book, she’s launched an eponymous social media campaign, #WomenWhoWork, which “celebrates the multidimensionality of today’s working women,” according to her site. “Regardless of our job titles, we’re each working hard to create the lives we want to live. We’re in it together. It isn’t easy — but it’s worth it.”
Ivanka married Kushner in 2009, after a courtship of just over two years. They would probably have wed sooner, but could not get engaged until Ivanka converted to Kushner’s religion, Judaism, according to Romper. In a 2015 Vogue interview, Kushner called Ivanka “definitely the CEO of our household, whereas I’m more on the board of directors.”
He goes on to say in his essay, “If you know Ivanka, you have not been surprised to see her emerge during this crazy campaign season as a leader advocating for serious policies to support American women and their families — these are issues she has been championing for years. It took real courage for Ivanka to stand before 35 million Americans, including many who had not previously focused on these issues before, to help advance substantive policies that will dramatically improve U.S. law in favor of all women, parents and children.
The old adage might go, “Behind every successful man is a great woman.” Kushner shows us, with his modern-day love letter, that behind every successful woman is a partner who supports and appreciates her.
