'Italy has abandoned us': Brother trapped with sister's body in coronavirus shutdown

An Italian man issued a desperate appeal on social media this week, begging authorities to come collect his sister's body, who died at home after contracting coronavirus.

"I have my sister here in bed, dead. I don't know what to do, I can't honor her like she deserves because our institutions abandoned me. I got in touch with anyone I could, I don't want to name names for now but no one was able to give me an answer."

In the emotional video Luca Franzese, an Italian actor shows his sister - Teresa Franzese - motionless on the bed in their Naples home.

His plea shows the desperate situation unfolding in Italy, where more than 1,000 people have died from the coronavirus.

Millions of Italians are now under lock down as the country tries to contain the virus's spread.

"My sister had a form of epilepsy, she was a subject at risk and no one cared. Guys, we are ruined, italy has abandoned us, let's stay strong together."

The 47 year old started to show symptoms of coronavirus last week, according to her brother.

But he said her doctor refused to treat her and it wasn't until 36 hours after her death when authorities arrived to take her away.
