Italian journalist for La Stampa daily missing in Syria for 2 months contacts family

MILAN (AP) -- Italy's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a war reporter for the Turin daily La Stampa has been in touch with his family for the first time since disappearing in Syria in April.

La Stampa's editor-in-chief Mario Calabrese broke the news with a message on Twitter on Thursday evening that 62-year-old Domenico Quirico was still alive and had spoken briefly by phone with his wife. Calabrese said that Quirico remained in Syria, and that the situation has not yet been resolved.

The Foreign Ministry statement emphasized that it was a delicate moment.

Quirico, an experienced war reporter, entered Syria on April 6 from Lebanon, and was heading to the Homs area when he went missing on April 9.
