The Biden administration says there should be consequences for Iran, after the Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel over the weekend.

“Going forward, we will be working to further isolate Iran internationally and increase economic and other forms of pressure,” White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby said.

The U.S. has already put hundreds of sanctions on Iran since President Biden took office, according to State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller. He says the U.S. will continue to enforce those.

“But I don’t have any specific measures to announce today,” Miller said.

Kirby says it’s important the House pass legislation that would give billions of dollars in more military aid to Israel. A bill has already passed the Senate but has stalled in the House.

“Passing that bill is the fastest and surest way to get Israel the aid it needs,” Kirby said.

After an intense weekend, President Joe Biden is trying to shore up international support for Israel.

“The President spent hours in the situation room closely monitoring the latest developments in the Middle East,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Jean-Pierre says President Biden spoke with the Israeli Prime Minister Saturday night. He also convened leaders of the Group of Seven countries to condemn Iran and prevent further escalation.

“The United States is committed to Israel’s security,” President Biden said.

While meeting at the White House with the Prime Minister of Iraq, President Biden said the U.S. is committed to preventing the conflict from spreading and to a cease-fire that would require the release of hostages.
