Foursquare just laid off 105 employees
Foursquare, the location-focused outfit that in 2020 merged with Factual, another location-focused outfit, is joining the parade of companies to make cuts to one of its biggest cost centers – employees – in 2024. Per an email sent out to staffers Thursday afternoon by current CEO Gary Little and viewed by TechCrunch, 105 employees were just let go as the company seeks to “streamline” its operations, and “set the company on more sustainable financial footing.” Impacted employees saw their system access removed upon receipt of Foursquare’s notification email.

This is not a joke: According to a job listing, President Joe Biden's reelection campaign needs someone to manage memes. The "Partner Manager, Content and Meme Pages" hire will "initiate and manage day-to-day operations in engaging the internet’s top content and meme pages." “I do think that we can and should infuse relevant, trendy and fun moments into how we are communicating, especially on digital platforms,” Annie Wu Henry, a creator and digital communications strategist, told TechCrunch in February.

Bolster, creator of the CheckPhish phishing tracker, raises $14M led by Microsoft's M12
Now, an AI startup called Bolster that has built a novel approach to tackle that trick has raised $14 million in funding to expand its work, both across a popular free phish-checking portal it operates called (appropriately) CheckPhish, as well as with its primary paying customers: brands and other businesses. Microsoft’s venture fund M12 led the round as a new backer in the company, with participation also from Thomvest Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Liberty Global Ventures, Cheyenne Ventures, Cervin Ventures and Transform Capital. Bolster’s not disclosing its valuation but it has now raised around $40 million.

Anthropic is expanding to Europe and raising more money
On the heels of OpenAI announcing the latest iteration of its GPT large language model, its biggest rival in generative AI in the U.S. announced an expansion of its own. Anthropic said Monday that Claude, its AI assistant, is now live in Europe with support for "multiple languages," including French, German, Italian and Spanish across Claude.ai, its iOS app and its business plan for teams. The launch comes after Anthropic extended its API to Europe to get developers using and integrating its models.

White House proposes up to $120M to help fund Polar Semiconductor's chip facility expansion
The Biden administration announced Monday that Polar Semiconductor will receive up to $120 million in federal funds to expand its chip manufacturing facility in Minnesota. The funding stems from the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which Biden signed into law in August 2022 to strengthen the U.S. supply of semiconductors. The expansion of Polar Semiconductor’s facility would enable the company to double its U.S. production capacity of sensor and power chips within two years, the U.S. Department of Commerce said in a press release.
