IRS offers tax help to Kansans

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is giving out some helpful tips to Kansans to help them save money when filing their taxes this year.

Kansans have until April 15 to file their taxes for 2023 to avoid facing filing penalties. To avoid this, the IRS is offering some helpful tips and reminders.

IRS spokesman Cesar Yabor put out a list of tips in a press release on March 15 to assist Kansans who have yet to file. To get started, people can check out the IRS Tax Time Guide for details on how to file an accurate return. This can help those who might owe taxes by informing them of new options for filing returns.

Filers who earned $79,000 or less last year can make use of IRS Free File to file their taxes electronically. Those who need additional time to file a return can use IRS Free File to request a six-month extension before the deadline on April 15 to avoid fees. Filers must still pay what they owe by April 15, however.

Yabor said members of the military can use MilTax which offers free return preparation and electronic filing for federal tax returns along with up to three state income tax returns.

Those who can’t pay the full amount of taxes owed by April 15 are encouraged to file and pay what they can to reduce later penalties and interest. The IRS offers several ways for people to make electronic payments and schedule a payment plan or make an agreement with the IRS.

You can make an IRS account online by clicking here. The account can be used to make secure payments for outstanding 2023 balances, pay quarterly estimated taxes for the 2024 tax season or make a request for an extension. The IRS account also gives Kansas taxpayers access to information such as:

  • Adjusted Gross Income.

  • Payment history and any scheduled or pending payments.

  • Payment plan details.

  • Digital copies of select notices from the IRS.
