Iowa S Brandon Snyder re-tore his ACL in his first game of 2017
Iowa safety Brandon Snyder hasn’t played since Iowa’s first game of October. It’s because he tore the ACL in his left knee for a second time.
Snyder suffered a torn ACL during spring practice in April. He progressed through his rehabilitation quickly enough that he was able to play in Iowa’s 45-16 win over Illinois on Oct. 7. Tuesday, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz revealed Snyder re-tore his left ACL in that game and would obviously continue to be sidelined the rest of the season.
“Brandon will have surgery and look forward to returning to action in 2018,” Ferentz said in a statement. “Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. We know from past experience that Brandon will work as hard as possible towards a full and complete recovery for next season.”
Ferentz said he wasn’t optimistic about Snyder’s chances of obtaining a medical redshirt for the season. The redshirt junior used his normal redshirt as a freshman. From Hawk Central:
“There’s risk in everything we do,” Ferentz said. “I had questions months ago about it — what would the layout be — and I learned a lot, I got educated. We have an excellent medical staff here, but those guys don’t live in a closet. They talk with people that have a lot of expertise in that area. … I think we all felt he made the right move coming back. We were very conservative with his return, based on what he had tested and how he had passed through all the protocol.”
Snyder opened the second half scoring in the Illinois game with an 89-yard return of an interception for a touchdown. The score gave Iowa a 24-17 lead on the way to a comfortable 45-16 win.
The safety was Iowa’s third-leading tackler a year ago with 85 stops and three interceptions. He’ll miss Iowa’s 2018 spring practices as he rehabs from the second torn ligament.
