Iowa All-American wrestler accused of lying to police after being shot in the knee
Police have charged University of Iowa All-American wrestler Sam Stoll after he allegedly lied to law enforcement about a gunshot wound to his knee that he sustained earlier this month, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Stoll initially told police that he shot himself in the knee after his firearm “accidentally” discharged while sitting in his garage early on July 19 in Iowa City, Iowa. Stoll went to the hospital that morning, underwent surgery on his knee and was released from the hospital the next day.
Investigating officers, though, then determined that the shooting did not take place at his home as Stoll previously said.
Upon confronting him, Stoll changed his story and recanted his initial statement. He told police that instead “he was shot while playing a prank on a friend at that friend’s home in Iowa City.” Stoll did not reveal who actually fired the shot that hit him in his knee.
Iowa City police charged Stoll with “false report to public entity” on Friday, which is a simple misdemeanor charge that can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine up to $625.
“As I shared previously, Sam Stoll’s health was our number one concern and he is doing well,” Iowa wrestling coach Terry Brands said in a statement on Friday. “I am disappointed in his actions related to this incident, as they do not reflect our values. Regarding discipline, we will follow all University and Athletics Department code of conduct policies.”
The heavyweight wrestler went 25-6 as a junior last year and placed fifth at the NCAA Championships. He currently holds a 54-14 career record with the Hawkeyes heading into his final season.
